BlackRock, SBI Holdings and Startale Group has signed a memorandum of understanding to study how tokenized money market funds could connect with JPYSC, a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin, in a move aimed at advancing Japan’s onchain financial infrastructure.

Announced on Oct. 27, the collaboration will explore ways to link tokenized investment products with yen-denominated stablecoins, combining the companies’ capabilities in global asset management, financial services and blockchain technology.

The companies will assess the technical infrastructure needed to connect the assets, potential commercial models and distribution opportunities, and regulatory considerations. They also plan to explore cooperation with financial institutions and businesses in Japan and overseas to support the development of tokenized assets and stablecoins.

The agreement comes as tokenization of traditional financial products, including money market funds, gains traction globally.

Japan has established a legal framework for stablecoins through amendments to the Payment Services Act, but further infrastructure and distribution channels are needed to connect stablecoins with tokenized financial products and encourage market adoption.
