Mastercard has unveiled Stablecoin Security, a risk intelligence service that lets financial institutions screen stablecoin payments for fraud, scams and sanctions exposure before funds move onchain, The Block reported on October 19.

The service, announced at Money20/20 USA, will launch first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first announced partners.

Screening from payment initiation to onchain settlement

Stablecoin Security combines Mastercard’s payment data with blockchain intelligence to assess risk across the fiat and stablecoin lifecycle, according to PYMNTS. It analyzes transaction context, source of funds, exposure to restricted parties and scam indicators, and assigns a risk score to each payment.

The tool is delivered through a platform-agnostic API, allowing banks to plug it into existing fraud, compliance and case management systems.

“Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence,” said Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of security solutions.

Partners focused on cross-border payments

Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers in more than 113 countries and 72 currencies, while Keyrails focuses on high-value cross-border trade payments in emerging markets. Both companies have taken part in Mastercard’s Start Path blockchain and digital assets program.

Mastercard plans to extend the service through BVNK, the stablecoin payments firm it agreed to acquire in March in a deal worth up to $1.8 billion and completed in August.

Part of a broader stablecoin push

The launch follows the debut of Mastercard’s Global Money Platform the previous week, its first major integration of BVNK, which combines fiat and stablecoin accounts, real-time conversion, card spending and local bank payouts through a single API.

In August, Mastercard and Borderless.xyz also began piloting a Crypto Credential program with Infinia, Walapay and Koywe to add trust signals to cross-border stablecoin payments.
